about

The track Why’d You Have To? represents the overwhelming magnetism you feel for somebody that hits you like a ton of bricks. It’s that insatiable desire to be with that person; soak them in. You want to dive in headfirst, but you’ve been hurt in the past, so you try to hold back. But the more you try to push your feelings away, the stronger they get. They take over the space in your mind, and you just want more. You like them so much you hate them a little bit for it. Because they make you feel like you’re losing control. You want to ask them, ‘Why do you have this effect on me? Why you? Why’d you have to do that?’

Written on the plane ride home from a recording session, Hatton describes fighting the feeling that demanded it become a song: “The melody came out of nowhere, and then I couldn't get it out of my head, just like this person... and I thought that was perfectly fitting. It’s the sound of me giving in. Falling in love with reckless abandon.”

lyrics

Blurring the lines one too many times, you pull me close
Your voice or your touch, I just don’t know what I like the most
Yeah, just one more hit, I swear I will quit, it’s dangerous I admit
Your skin down to your core, I just want more

Why’d you have to know the right things to say?
Why’d you have to keep blowing me away?
Why’d you have to make me want you so bad?
Why’d you have to do that?

Swear you’ll behave, I peel back the layers ‘neath that grin
Unsolvable puzzle, look at the trouble that we’re in
Like whiskey on ice, I’m your perfect type, it’s wrong, but it feels so right
Your skin down to your core, I just want more

Why’d you have to know the right things to say?
Why’d you have to keep blowing me away?
Why’d you have to make me want you so bad?
Why’d you have to do that?

Why’d you have to give me those eyes, so blue?
Why’d you have to love how I look at you?
Why’d you have to smile when I kissed you back?
Why’d you have to do that?
Why’d you have to do that?

I keep you just out of reach, ‘cause it’s too good to believe
You sweep me off my feet and love every inch of me, yeah

Why’d you have to know the right things to say?
Why’d you have to keep blowing me away?
Why’d you have to make me want you so bad?
Why’d you have to do that?

Why’d you have to give me those eyes so blue?
Why’d you have to love how I look at you?
Why’d you have to smile when I kissed you back?
Why’d you have to do that? Oh
Why’d you have to do that? Oh
Why’d you have to do that?
Why’d you have to do that?
Why’d you have to do that?
