about
Set in a ski lodge on a mountain, the location where Emily Hatton actually wrote the song, ‘Make It Slow’ details the fragile first hours of meeting and getting to know someone when it just ‘clicks.’
Emily recounts, “Warm, cozy nights by a wood-burning fireplace. You’ve just met, but you feel so comfortable with this person, like you’ve known them for years - immersed in deep conversations of shared dreams, things you find fascinating, and hypotheticals... It’s that kind of moment where you wish time would just slow, because you don’t want it to end.” The track paints a vivid picture of the enchanting encounter on the snow-covered peaks of Mount Hotham, and the sound definitely reflects the magical, romantic innocence. “I was just sitting in this log cabin, thinking to myself, ‘I’ve never felt this connected to someone in my entire life’. I wanted to hold onto that moment so bad, just like I was holding them, and that’s when the thought just popped into my head: ‘maybe if I hold you tighter, I’m not gonna have to go.’ I wrote the song that day. And even though the moment’s gone now, by writing it, I captured it, and I can go back and revisit it. So in a way, I did make it last forever.”
lyrics
The road is twisting up the mountain
Don’t know what I’ll find up there
I step off the bus, breathe it all in
I feel more than snow in this air
The ski lodge is home the next few days
And the common room is open late
You’re standing there, bright eyes and tousled hair
I smile, caught up in this winter haze
And it feels like I’ve known you for a lifetime before
You say heaven must have dropped an angel at your door
So maybe if I hold you tighter, I’m not gonna have to go
And you’re the best thing I’ve stumbled on
Just thought that you should know
Ooh, and if I could make time stop, I would it in this moment
If this moment’s all I’ve got with you
Make it slow, make it slow
Beside the fire we talk for hours
But it’s just as good without a word
Your hand on my knee, we feel that electricity
You say my laugh’s the most perfect thing you’ve heard
Maybe if I hold you tighter, I’m not gonna have to go
And you’re the best thing I’ve stumbled on, just thought that you should know
Ooh, and if I could make time stop, I would it in this moment
If this moment’s all I’ve got with you
Make it slow
‘Cause I don’t want to let go
Of something so rare
I want to breathe you in with the midnight air
And maybe if I hold you tighter, I’m not gonna have to go
And you’re the best thing I’ve stumbled on
Just thought that you should know
Ooh, and if I could make time stop, I would in this moment
‘Cause this moment’s all I’ve got
With you
Make it slow, make it slow
The road is twisting down the mountain
